Man Utd news: Ed Woodward to support Jose Mourinho ‘one last time’ amid crisis

Manchester United chief Woodward is standing by Mourinho despite reports last week emerging saying the manager would be sacked.

The duo’s relationship has weakened in recent times, despite their best attempts to play down reports of a feud, with mistakes in the summer transfer market the reason why.

Mourinho felt Manchester United needed five signings to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title, despite finishing second in the league last season.

But he got just three. Fred, Diogo Dalot and back-up goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Mourinho still reckons his United team is in sore need of investment.

And Spanish outlet AS say that Woodward is now willing to back Mourinho one final time amid their current Premier League woes.

The article details how Mourinho paid a trip to Montenegro to watch Serbia powerhouse Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in action last night.

It is unclear, though, whether Woodward will fork out for the Lazio star – particularly when the club’s midfield options are so well stocked.

And it also remains to be seen whether Jose Mourinho can hang to his job until the New Year.

Zinedine Zidane is the favourite to take over at United should the Portuguese’s head roll.

Speaking recently, though, Woodward vowed to back Mourinho.

“Everyone at the club is working tirelessly to add to Manchester United’s 66 and Jose’s 25 trophies,” he said at an investors meeting.

“That is what our passionate fans and our history demands.

“We are committed to our philosophy of blending top academy graduates with world class players and are proud that, once again, last season we had more academy graduate minutes on the pitch than any other Premier League club.

“Our increased revenue expectation for the year demonstrates our continued strong long-term financial performance which underpins everything we do and allows us to compete for top talent in an increasingly competitive transfer market.”

United are next in action against Chelsea after the international break.
