Why is Cristiano Ronaldo not playing for Portugal against Poland in Nations League match?

Ronaldo will not feature for Portugal when they take on Poland in Chorzow this evening.

The UEFA Nations League fixture is both sides’ second in the competition, with Portugal starting well with a 1-0 victory over Italy – the only other side in Group 3 – in their opener.

Poland, meanwhile, drew against the Azzurri in their first League A match.

Portugal will be without their all-time leading goalscorer Ronaldo, however.

Why is Cristiano Ronaldo not playing against Poland?

Following the World Cup, where Portugal were knocked out in the Last 16 by Uruguay, Ronaldo asked to have a break from international football until 2019.

It is thought that the Juventus forward wants time to settle into life in Turin, where he moved to after his summer transfer from Real Madrid.

Granting his request, the 33-year-old was also left out of the September internationals against Italy and Croatia.

He is expected to miss the November internationals against Italy and Poland, also.

Portugal manager Fernando Santos explained the decision when announcing his 25-man squad last week.

The manager said: ”[Federation] president Fernando Gomes and I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo.

“And we considered it best for the player not to be included in this and November’s call-ups.”

In Ronaldo’s absence, Andre Silva is expected to lead the line, with Bernardo Silva and Bruma either side of him.

Sevilla’ Silva has already bagged seven goals in La Liga this season and will be keen to make the most of Ronaldo’s omission from the national team.

The La Liga outfit are top of the league with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid trailing in their wake thanks in large to Silva.

Santos’s side are expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation.
