Conor McGregor to RETIRE: Khabib Nurmagomedov defeat prompts shock claim

That is the strong opinion of former NFL star-turned pundit Marcellus Wiley, who claims there is nothing left for Conor McGregor to achieve in the sport.

The Irishman returned to the Octagon on Saturday with plenty of hype surrounding his match against Nurmagomedov.

But his long-awaited return to the sport ended in defeat as the Russian forced McGregor to submit in the fourth round.

There was controversy at the end of the fight when Nurmagomedov – still fired up from McGregor’s post-match taunts – jumped out of the cage into the crowd to attack his opponent’s team.

McGregor was about to jump out to defend his stricken pals before members of Nurmagomedov’s team entered the cage to attack him.

Security were soon able to get a handle on the melee with UFC president Dana White refusing to hand Nurmagomedov his belt in the cage.

McGregor has already made it clear he wants a rematch to claim back his title.

However, Wiley believes the 30-year-old should walk away from the sport.

“It’s about that time. Check your watches. It’s ticking on it,” Wiley said on Speak For Yourself.

“He’s the biggest star in the sport and it seems like he’s outgrown the sport.

“Think about what he’s had to do these last couple of years as being the biggest star.

“He’s jumped weight classes three times so he’s looking to squeeze the juice out of the UFC wherever there is juice.

“He’s also jumped sport to fight Floyd Mayweather to try and squeeze some juice because there’s not enough nutrients or star quality in the UFC.

“This is a guy that’s like ‘what’s left here and what’s next for me’.

“The UFC is buttering his bread so respect the UFC for what they have built in terms of his brand and his exposure.”

The UFC announced yesterday McGregor has been suspended for a month on medical grounds due to injuries he suffered against Nurmagomedov.
