Haiti earthquake map: Where is Haiti? Is Dominican Republic affected?

At least 11 people have died and 135 other are injured after the quake  struck at 12.11am on Sunday morning.

The quake was centred around 12 miles (20kilometress) west-northwest of Ti Port-de-Paix off Haiti’s north coast.

A depth of 10km was also recorded by the US Geographical Survey.

Where is Haiti? 

Haiti is a Caribbean Country which shares the Hispaniola island with the Dominican Republic on its east. 

An estimated 10.8 million people live in Haiti.

This makes it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Haiti is also the second-most populous country in the Caribbean overall.

Haiti was originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people. 

However, Christopher Columbus created the first European settlement there. 

Spain ruled until the early 17th century and the island was named La Española.

But the French also settled there, which led to the western portion of the island named Saint-Domingue instead. 

Is Dominican Republic affected?

The earthquake reportedly caused light shaking across the Dominican Republic, according to he Caribjournal.

However, it is not known if any buildings were damaged or if anyone sustained injuries in the Caribbean Island which borders Haiti. 

The Caribbean is a seismically active region as it lies along the Ring of Fire, where 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur.
