MAN UTD vs NEWCASTLE

25: McTominay seems to have been moved to centre-back alongside Smalling, with Young and Shaw bombing up the wings. It’s effectively a very attacking 4-1-4-1.

22: Rashford misses a great chance as he headers wide from six yards. He quickly runs to get the ball and plant it for Dubravka to kick. The Sloavkian takes his time.

20: Hard to tell what formation United have slotted into, because the game is so stretched. Once – if – there’s calm, the strcuture of the team might be clearer. Or maybe Jose’s just thought: “To hell with it.”

19: MAN UTD SUB – Mata on for Bailly.

17: Juan Mata is being stripped to come on. Jose is not messing about. Eric Bailly expected to come off.

15: Young takes a regular throw-in and there are boos ringing around Old Trafford. Haven’t seen anything of the like before.

13: United have a couple corners which come to nothing, everyone still seems in disbelief around the ground.

Muto

10: GOAL! Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle | Muto

WOW. This is incredible, Newcastle – who scored three goals in seven games before today, now have two in 10 minutes. The Magpies simply sustained a period of pressure in the United box and Muto, making his first league start, somehow finds room in the crammed box, gets away from Young with a neat shift to his left, and slams it home. Boos at Old Trafford.

07: GOAL! Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle | Kenedy

Ah dear, Jose. Kenedy is threaded through a ball from a throw-in and runs at Young, who he easily turns inside out with a simple cut inside onto his left foot. The Brazilian then simply arcs the ball home past De Gea’s outstretched hand.

04: Newcastle’s first foray into the United half comes to nothing after a poor cross from Kenedy. Young tries to match his opponent with an equally shoddy cross.

03: United start brightly, breaking down the left with Anthony Martial, but his through ball for Lukaku is intercepted.

01: The Old Trafford faithful are in full voice getting behind the team. The travelling Geordies aren’t half making a racquet, either.

KICK-OFF

Just prior to kick-off, Mourinho playfully squirts water from his bottle at the camera.

There’s a good atmosphere inside Old Trafford as the teams come out.

Mourinho comes out of the tunnel with a rye smile – part of you thinks he enjoys these sort of crises?

17:20: We are only eight weeks into the season, yet this is the fifth side from last year’s top six who Newcastle have had to face. Talk about a tough start. Anyhow, here’s what manager Rafa Benitez had to say before the game…

“We have to perform in the way we want to perform, so we need to be solid, stay in the game and we go into every game trying to win.

“[Is belief still in the camp?] 100 per cent, it’s a long race so we have to carry on. Last year we were at the bottom in January and we finished 10th. We must believe this year we can do the same.

“Manchester United is a very strong team, it doesn’t matter which players play. But we believe we can come here and get something.”

Paul Pogba

17:10: Mourinho has won all seven home matches against Newcastle in all competitions, and has this to say ahead of the game…

“[Is this a must-win game?] Every game is a must-win game. That’s how I feel and that’s how I like my players to feel. It’s about the team, it’s not about [individual selections].

“Anthony [Martial], in the last match for 15 minutes [v Valencia], was alive and there is a good connection between him and the fans here at home. They can push him.”

“We didn’t have a phenomenal performance against Valencia but it was positive and to make lots of changes would not be the right thing. In this moment Ashley Young can give us a bit more speed and energy on the right side.”

Old Trafford

17:00: The 3pm games are over, with Wolves and Everton claiming one-goal margin wins at Crystal Palace and Leicester, respectively.

Bournemouth continued their unpredictable form with an incredible 4-0 away win against Watford, while Spurs dodged a European hangover with a narrow 1-0 victory over Cardiff. Burnley drew 1-1 at home to Huddersfield.

Those results mean that United have temporarily slipped down to 11th, but a win could see them rise to eighth.

Newcastle would move to 16th with a win, but a freakish eight-goal battering would put them bottom.

Premier League table

16:45: Two changes for Manchester United from the team that faced West Ham last weekend; Bailly and Rashford come in for Lindelof and Fellaini, as the side seemingly reverts to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Club captain Antonio Valencia is left out of the matchday squad after liking an Instagram post suggesting Mourinho should be sacked, following United’s midweek 0-0 draw with Valencia.

Newcastle, meanwhile, make three switches, with Fernandez, Manquillo and Muto coming in for Clark, Atsu and Joselu.

The Magpies have scored the least amount of goals in the league this season – will two attackers bear more fruit?

GOOD EVENING

Welcome to live commentary between Manchester United and Newcastle. There are a few parallels between the sides at Old Trafford tonight: miserable managers, out-of-form players, and short-fused fans. So we’re in for a treat.

United have denied reports that Jose Mourinho will be sacked irrespective of the result tonight, and have in fact offered him their backing (unlike in the summer).

As for Rafael Benitez, he and his players were wined and dined at a Tyneside Italian during the week, with club owner Mike Ashley promising a holiday for the players, should they stay in the Premier League. league.
