WWE RAW: Undertaker explains John Cena’s success ahead of WWE Super Show-Down return

Cena has a large fanbase but still gets loud boos from a significant portion of the WWE Universe every time he competes even though he wrestles as a babyface.

However, that didn’t stop him from becoming the company’s top star, winning 16 world titles and beating some of the greatest wrestlers of all time like The Rock, Shawn Michaels and Triple H.

Undertaker insists that The Champ’s ability to get such intense reactions sells tickets and lead to him wrestling in front of packed arenas.

Taker told Pastor Ed Young’s latest Wrastlin episode in a rare out-of-character interview: “Cena is such an anomaly because you don’t know one night to the next one [if] they’re gonna go ballistically crazy for him or they’re gonna boo him out of the building.

“He’s probably the most polarising guy that’s come along in a long time because his fanbase is crazy.

“But what happens [is] he sells tickets, he works in front of full arenas. Same thing when Rock was there.”

Fans have been booing Cena ever since 2005 because they feel like his move set is very limited but Undertaker points out the secret to success in professional wrestling doesn’t lie in a performer’s arsenal.

The Deadman insists that when it comes to sports entertainment the key is to inspire a reaction from the crowd and it doesn’t matter if it is positive or negative.

The Phenom added: “Wrestling and sports entertainment is not about the moves, it really isn’t. It’s [about] being able to evoke emotion in one facet or another.

“You have to either make people love you or you have to make them hate you, it doesn’t really matter either way.

“If you can’t bring that emotion out of your audience [then] you’re not going to have them for long.

“What happens with these young guys is they’re so athletic and so gifted, they’ll do some crazy double backflip off the top rope and land on somebody on the floor and then that’s what the audience takes away from it, that this guy does crazy stuff.

“But you can only see that so many times before you’re like, ‘I’ve seen that, [now] I need something new’.

“They have to keep upping the ante and when you up the ante like that then you increase your potential for injuries and catastrophic injuries.

“So characters like The Rock, Cena, [Ric] Flair, they had the ability to either make you love them or make you hate them.

“That’s the key. We use wrestling moves to help tell the story but it boils down to the character and being able to bring that emotion out of your audience. It’s all about love or hate.”

Cena will be making his in-ring return at WWE Super Show-Down this Saturday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.

The Leader of the Cenation will team up with Bobby Lashley and face Kevin Owens as well as Elias in a Tag Team Match.

Undertaker will also be competing Down Under as he will battle legendary rival Triple H for the last time ever.
