Lewis Hamilton: F1 fans RAGING as Mercedes explain Russian Grand Prix orders

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff was captured in the pit lane authorising the manoeuvre which in theory will allow Hamilton to extend his 40-point gap over Sebastian Vettel in the standings.

The Ferrari driver was in third place and closing down on Hamilton.

Mercedes have since taken to twitter to explain exactly why they told Bottas to give up his theoretical first win of the season.

“Hard call to make, Lisa. But we swapped positions to cover the threat of VET (Vettel) to Lewis,” Mercedes wrote when replying one of their many frustrated fans.

The Silver Arrows had locked out the front row in qualifying and there was hopes they would allow their two drivers to race each other.

But with only five races of the season remaining after this weekend, they took a more conservative approach to try and secure the double.

However, such tactics make the race less entertaining and Formula One fans have taken to social media to blast Mercedes.

“This ‘strategy’ is what ruins f1 to everyone,” one fan wrote.

And another added: “We want racing not Wingman Bottas to save Hamilton.”

A further supporter noted: “ IF Lewis wants to f***ing win against Vettel with 40 point lead. Then let him overtake Valtteri BY RACING? Jesus f** I’m done with this s***.”

Mercedes chief strategist James Vowles also explained: “We had a risk with Lewis against Vettel, he has a small blister.

“I had to do this to make sure we secure this.”
