Google Maps is now more useful than ever following the release of iOS 12

Google Maps is a hugely-popular application that can be used for navigation in addition to finding landmarks, restaurants and businesses.

It is harnessed across the globe and presents an incredibly low barrier to entry for users thanks to its simple layout.

Google Maps is available on desktops and smartphones, meaning it can be taken advantage of everywhere.

The application regularly receives updates from the tech giant that bring new functionality.

Ahead of the launch of iOS 12 that arrived on both iPhone and iPad on September 17, images emerged of Google Maps being used through Apple CarPlay, suggesting the application was set for an imminent debut on the dashboard system.

However, at the time a firm release date was not known.

In the description for iOS 12 ahead of its release Apple noted “third-party navigation apps” would be coming to CarPlay.

The trillion-dollar company said: “CarPlay now supports third-party navigation apps, giving drivers even more choices for a familiar experience on the dashboard while they drive.”

But now Google Maps has officially landed on dashboard system, meaning users now have the choice to harness it instead of Apple Maps.

Google has confirmed the move and insists the “same navigation experience found in the app” is present on CarPlay.

A blog post from Ruwen Hess, the product manager of Google Maps, declared: “Google Maps on CarPlay features the same navigation experience found in the app.

“Search for places, see alternative routes and get live, up to date information about traffic jams and delays happening right now.

“See an up to the minute ETA so you know exactly when you’ll be at your destination.”

Most notably users are still able use Google Maps even if they are without an internet connection as the app lets users download specified data for such a circumstance.

Hess discussed the feature: “You can still find your way even if you have spotty reception or an expensive data plans.

“Whether you’re camping in the wilderness or traveling abroad, you can use downloaded maps of an area so you can see directions and use turn by turn navigation even when you can’t get online.”

Users will need to make sure their iPhone is running iOS 12 to be able to take advantage of Google Maps on Apple CarPlay.

iOS 12 is available to download right now for a score of iPhone and iPad models.
