Donald Trump angers Juncker by calling EU leader ‘NASTY’ in astonishing news conference

The comments were made at a summit with the Polish President Andrzej Duda and come after the two leaders held talks to reduce trade barriers across the Atlantic.

Mr Trump said: “J is a tough man. He’s a very good man, I like him.

“But he’s tough. He’s nasty. He’s the kind of guy I want negotiating for me, but he’s a tough, tough cookie.”

In response to this Mr Juncker’s chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas tweeted a reply aimed at Trump saying: “1. Tough? yes 2. Nasty? certainly not 3. The king of guy I want negotiating of me? Sorry not available”.

The relationship between the two world leaders has become increasingly strained since the beginning of June when the US imposed 20 percent tariffs on EU steel and aluminium.

As an example of his strength, said Mr Juncker refused three times before a deal was struck in July with regards to US demands for renegotiated trade arrangements with the European Union.

Mr Trump said: “I said that’s OK. We don’t have to renegotiate any longer. We are going to put a tariff on all of the millions of cars you send into the United States.”

The US president then said that “Juncker was in my office so quickly from Europe that I didn’t know they had aeroplanes that flew that fast”.

Mr Trump added: “I said where did you find this plane?”

Both chiefs vowed not to impose new tariffs on each other’s products as long as negotiations were making progress.

At the press conference with the Polish President, Mr Trump said that Washington was right to get rid of longstanding trade agreements with close allies.

Mr Trump said: “Our country has been abused, taken advantage of, by virtually every country that it does business with.”
