The Joker has seen many actors don the warped clown face paint to terrorise Gotham.
Some have been more successful than others.
Jared Leto’s recent outing as the clown prince of crime was a disappointment to critics and fans alike.
But fret not, as there is another adaptation of the DC Comics villain on the way.
Who is in The Joker movie cast?
The eponymous character is played by Joaquin Phoenix.
The more casual Batman fans may not know the Joker’s real name is Arthur Fleck.
The Joker movie is set to be a character study movie, examining how Fleck became the Joker.
Phoenix is a chameleon of an actor, known for truly inhabiting the roles he undertakes.

His performance as Johnny Cash in Walk The Line was lauded, and his work as an actor he has received a Grammy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and has three Academy Awards and British Academy Film Award nominations.
To play the Joker, he has lost a substantial amount of weight, leaving him almost unrecognisable.
Alongside the Joker, there had been rumours Alec Baldwin would join the cast but those were quickly dispelled by Baldwin himself.
One confirmed co-star is Zazie Beats as Sophie Drumond.

Sophie is a tough, single mum who sees how the lower classes struggle beneath the wealthy in Gotham city.
Robert DeNiro is set to appear in an unconfirmed role, confirming the movie’s noir thriller theme.
Marc Maron will also be in the film, though as what character remains to be seen.
Josh Pais will play Hoyt Vaughn, an old-school manager of hotel staff.

Rumoured additions to the cast include Frances Conroy as Penny.
Penny’s casting call read: “Lower class, very attractive in her younger days, still feels that way about herself.
“But recently her health has started failing, and she’s nearly bedridden in her Lower East Side apartment which she shares with her grown son who just moved back home.
“She’s obsessed with her former employer and can’t believe that this is what her life has come to, that she has ended up here, like this…”
The Joker is set for release October 4, 2019.
