Man Utd ‘target’ Nuno Espirito Santo HITS BACK at Jose Mourinho replacement claims

Santo was a shock appointment last season as Wolves manager but he steered them to promotion from the Championship.

And the Midlands side have made a solid start to life in the Premier League, with just one defeat from their four matches so far.

While Mourinho has come under fire after Manchester United lost back-to-back matches amid worries over his relationship with Paul Pogba and Ed Woodward.

Reports in Germany claimed Santo was being lined up by the United hierarchy to succeed Mourinho at Old Trafford.

But Santo has strongly played down those suggestions.

He said: ”You know me. I don’t talk about that. It does not make sense.

“This is not the moment to even think about it.

“I don’t think about it, I totally ignore that, I totally ignore it.”

When asked if he aspires to manage a club like United, he added: “I don’t do like that.

“I go on a daily basis. I know what I have to do tomorrow to prepare the boys well and prepare the team for a tough game against Burnley.

“This is the way I look at the future I take it day-by-day.”

Wolves face Burnley on Sunday and will be looking to keep up the momentum from their last match which they won 1-0 over West Ham.

And Santo says his players must replicate that performance consistently.

“The most important thing is that we established standards in the last game, and we have to maintain those standards,” Santo said.

“Winning is always good and makes things a lot easier when you are trying to establish an identity like we are.

“We won in the last minute as well, which gave us a bit more of that push, but we have to do it again.”
