Fortnite update TODAY: Epic Games patch notes news, surprise server downtime

Fans will need to download a new Fortnite update tonight that looks to fix some issues within the Battle Royale game.

However, while fans are expecting a big content patch to drop later, the development team made a surprise announcement as well.

Separate from the 5.40 content patch, Epic Games have released another update that is unlikely to include a long list of patch notes.

This is because this early update is focused on fixing bugs and glitches currently causing issues in the game.

It’s will not add any new content and is likely dealing with a lot of background stuff.

It’s already been confirmed that Save the World is getting the same thing, so fans can expect a little disruption this morning.

And while the later content update – expected to arrive at around 1pm in the UK – will not require downtime, this initial patch will.

“There will be a client update with downtime tomorrow, September 11 at 2 AM ET (0600 GMT),” a message from Epic Games reads.

“This is to fix a few issues and is separate from the v5.40 Content Update.”

The UK is currently in British Summer Time, meaning that the new downtime and update are actually arriving at 7am.

Epic Games hasn’t confirmed what the new update will look to fix, or how long servers will be offline.

Downtime usually lasts a few hours, so there’s the chance that this scheduled maintenance will end at around 10am, BST.

The new update will be released on all platforms, meaning disruption on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, Mac and Mobile.

It should also be noted that the development team usually starts to kick players from live games around 20 minutes before downtime is scheduled to begin.

The Fortnite Trello Board – which tracks bugs – doesn’t include a lot of reports currently, so it’s hard to guess exactly what this will fix.

However, we do know a few things about the new Fortnite content update that is being released later today.

A new Fortnite suppressed assault rifle looks set to be launched on Tuesday, along with a few other reported items.

The new weapon is being teased when players login and is labelled as “coming soon”, which means it should be coming with Fortnite content update V5.40.

But Fortnite fans have noticed something interesting about the teaser image showing the soon-to-be-released weapon.

The Fortnite suppressed assault rifle looks to have a camo skin on it, which may be a sign weapon skins are coming with the upcoming content update.

Other mysterious folders found in the game files for Fortnite update 5.40 included a pets folder and a music packs section.

The latter has sparked speculation that the original game music for Fortnite could be reappearing soon.

Customisation options for the Battle Bus were also hinted at in the leaked game files for Fortnite.

And unlike the early update, this content patch will come with patch notes, meaning players should know exactly what has been added to the game.
