Woman, toddler drown after car swept into swollen ditch

One person died when a car they were in was swept off the road and submerged under water in Fort Worth Saturday, the Fort Worth Fire Department says.

The incident happened near the intersection of South Cravens Road and Oakdale Drive.

The incident came not long after a woman and her young daughter drowned nearby when their car was swept into a ditch swollen with rainwater, Fort Worth police confirmed earlier in the day.

Fort Worth firefighters told NBC 5 the woman was driving northbound on the Loop 820 access road near Wilbarger when she hit high water, several feet deep, and was carried off the roadway and into a flooded ditch.

Fort Worth police were called to investigate a car submerged in high water and later found the woman and toddler trapped inside.

The identity of the woman and her child have not yet been confirmed.

Heavy rain dropped several inches of rain Saturday morning, prompting a Flash Flood Warning in Tarrant County until after noon and a Flood Warning until 3 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to use extreme caution on wet roadways and to follow the safety directive “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” when approaching roads covered with water.
