Spain team news: Predicted Spain line up vs England – Alba snubbed, De Gea to be dropped?

Luis Enrique starts his reign as Spain manager against England at Wembley this weekend, with a number of players set to be handed a chance to shine under the new boss.

La Furia Roja are looking to rebuild following a disastrous World Cup which saw Julen Lopetegui sacked on the eve of the tournament after agreeing to take over at Real Madrid.

A host of international retirements in the wake of their Last-16 exit has opened the door for a new generation of talent to make an impact, with Gerard Pique, David Silva and Andres Iniesta all bowing out.

However, Enrique has not been scared to wield the axe either with Jordi Alba left out of the current squad and David De Gea sweating on his first-team spot.

As well as Alba, who Enrique clashed with during their time at Barcelona, Atletico Madrid ace Koke has also found himself overlooked during the international break.

The pair’s absence has created an opportunity for the likes of Marcos Alonso and Saul Niguez to establish themselves in the starting XI, and both will hope to start against England.

De Gea endured a tough time in Russia and there have been calls for the stopper to be replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga between the posts.

Spain are likely to adopt a 4-3-3 formation with versatile defender Nacho stepping into Pique’s shoes alongside Sergio Ramos.

Dani Carvajal is expected to be preferred at right-back while Sergi Roberto and Thiago Alcantara will compete for a spot alongside Sergio Busquets.

is absent on paternity leave so Alvaro Morata is likely to start up front, although Rodrigo will hope to feature at Wembley.

Meanwhile, Isco and Marco Asensio are expected to occupy the wide positions and are the biggest threat to the Three Lions rearguard.

However, Iago Aspas is another casualty following the World Cup nightmare so Spain appear rather short of personnel in attack.

Speaking about his team selection, Enrique said: “To make the first list of players [as coach] has involved many hours and a lot of hard work.

“I understand there might be a lot of interest in players who are not on the list, that’s normal, but I have nothing to say about those who are not on the list. I’m full of reasons to bring those 24 who are here.

“These two games are against two semi-finalists from the last World Cup and it’s going to be very important to see where we stand and how hungry we are.”
