eBay: Rare £2 coin with minting error selling for £850 – check YOURS for this error NOW

eBay is the world’s biggest online marketplace and auction site, with thousands of rare and valuable items listed on the website every day.

The site is also the place to head when it comes to buying or selling rare coins, with many coins selling for sky-high amounts.

One coin that has just been listed on eBay is a rare £2 coin with “minting errors”, selling for a whopping £850.

The coin, listed this morning, is 2005 Guy Fawkes £2 coin, minted to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the foiled Gunpowder Plot.

Listed by eBay user “ewaller58”, the coin’s title reads: “2005 Rare Minting Error £2 Two Pound Coin Guy Fawkes – Missing the I in Fifth .”

More detail on the minting error is given away in the listing’s description, revealing: “2005 Guy Fawkes Two Pound Coin (used).

“Minting error as the coin is missing the I from the word FIFTH around the outer edging.

“Also the N on the NOVEMBER looks like an upside down V where it hasn’t been stamped clearly.

“I have included pictures with the flash also where you can clearly see the engraving for the I had not been completed.

“I have not seen anyone else reporting this error at the moment.”

Hoping to make 425 times the coin’s intended value, the seller started off the seven-day auction at £850.

The seller, who boats 100 per cent positive feedback, also has the coin open for offers.

The 2005 Guy Fawkes £2 coin was designed by Peter Forster and made to commemorate the foiled plot to assassinate King James I on the opening of parliament on November 5 1605.

The design features an arrangement of crosiers, maces and swords surrounded by stars, the dates 1605 and 2005, and features the denomination ‘Two Pounds’ below.

According to the Royal Mint, the circular arrangement in which they are shown is suggestive of a Catherine Wheel and the surrounding stars are a further reference to fireworks.

Despite the listing’s high asking prince, 5,140,500 of these £2 coins were actually minted, giving these coins a scarcity index of 5 – common, according to ChangeChecker.org.

However, the minting error on the coin could likely increase its value.

This week another £2 coin was listed on eBay but for a much more wallet-friendly £300.

The coin was minted to commemorate the Abolition of Slavery in 1807, with the “Buy It Now” price a whopping 150 times the coin’s face value.

The coin was viewed four times per hour, suggesting it is sought after on the platform.
