NBA trade news: La Lakers ‘like Klay Thompson’, Kawhi Leonard could miss out – Shelburne

The Lakers snapped up LeBron James during this offseason and are already planning ahead for next summer when they will look to build around their new superstar.

Kawhi Leonard’s situation has led many to assume he will be of interest.

Having left San Antonio for the Raptors Leonard could spend just one year in Toronto before moving back to his home city of LA.

But Ramona Shelburne thinks Thompson, son of Lakers legend Mychal Thompson, is an option despite his devotion to the Golden State Warriors.

“In terms of who they target next year, it’s whoever wants to come,” she said on ESPNLA Mornings with Keyshawn, LZ and Travis.

“My feeling about it, my sense from just talking to people in and around this (is that) one, it’s a little early, but I think they like Mychal’s boy.

“I think that would be the guy, in terms of skillset and how that would fit.

“Obviously Kawhi, he’s a great player as well, but we’ll see if he stays in Toronto now.

“But I think they like Klay (Thompson).”

Thompson, 28, is a three-time NBA champion and four-time NBA All-Star having been a Warrior since 2012.

And in all likelihood he will stay put unless the situation changes in Golden State, but Lakers’ interest, if genuine, could spark a change in thinking.

The Lakers are building a new project in LA having acquired James from the Cavs on a new mega deal.

And James is excited for the future with a new team to mould into challengers.

“I’m excited to play with all of them,” he told beIN Sport.

“Every last one of them. From the guys that were there, to all us newcomers.

“It’s an exciting time for us in L.A.”
