Horror of mass killings in Mexico: 166 skulls of drug cartels victims FOUND in huge grave

Investigators found a total of 166 skulls buried beneath the earth at the unknown location, after a witness told prosecutors there were “hundreds of bodies” in the area.

State prosecutor Jorge Winckler believes the bodies were buried just two years ago, but would not reveal the exact location.

Officials discovered 32 burial pits and 114 identification cards among the buried remains, along with clothes, personal belongings and skeletal remains of victims.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of more buried bodies in the region.

The mass grave yard is thought to be related to Mexico’s ongoing drug war between cartels.

In 2006, Mexico authorised a nationwide crackdown against drug trade in the country, leading to more than 200, 000 deaths.

The fight against Mexico’s ongoing drug epidemic has led to spiralling levels of violence across the South American state.

Last year, 28, 702 people were murdered and 37, 000 are still reported missing.

The Mexican state of Veracruz has seen a long-standing row between the Zetas and Jalisco drug cartels, who often bury their victims in mass graves.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is based in the Mexican town of Jalisco, headed by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, one of Mexico’s most-wanted drug lords.

Meanwhile, rival gang Los Zetas – a Mexican criminal syndicate – is known as one of the most dangerous drug cartels in the country and is behind several sex trafficking and gun running rings.

The South American state has faced a series of human rights abuses and government scandals, giving rise to ongoing corruption within Mexico’s ruling body.

Former Veracruz state governor, Javier Duarte, is currently awaiting trial on organised crime and money laundering charges, but has denied all allegations.

In June, he was issued new charges in the unexpected disappearance of at least 13 people.

Mr Duarte took office in December 2010, and was involved in several incident relating to gang violence, kidnapping and increasing Mexico’s debt by twofold.

In 2016 and 2017, Mexican authorities discovered 253 skulls and bodies buried in pits near the capital, after a relatives of the deceased unexpectedly received a map of the grave location.

In 2011, 236 bodies were discovered in the northern state of Durango while193 bodies were found in Tamaulipas state, north of Veracruz.
