Samsung Galaxy S10 may have more competition than expected when it launches next year

Galaxy S10 is expected to follow tradition by being announced and released at the start of next year.

And Samsung has been rumoured to be planning substantial upgrades for the hardware.

A recent report from The Investor, that cited an “industry source”, emphasised the Galaxy S10 will come in three variants and will all come with futuristic technology.

In addition to a standard S10, an S10+ is also expected.

But a third variant has also been rumoured that will be cheaper and will presumably forgo certain premium features to justify its smaller price tag.

The publication declared all three devices will come with a fingerprint sensor embedded in the front glass.

Both the Galaxy S10 and S10+ were said to tout an ultrasonic in-screen scanner by the source while the cheaper model would come with an optical sensor.

The individual claiming to be familiar with the South Korean tech giant’s plans said: “The two high-end Galaxy S models will come fitted with an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanner while the other one will house an optical fingerprint sensor beneath the screen.”

Both types of technology allow for snappy unlocking, however ultrasonic hardware could allow for more accurate and secure functionality.

While such news should have many excited about the announcement of the Galaxy S10, it appears the flagship could face more competition than initially expected next year.

That is because Samsung is also rumoured to be planning the unveiling of a new, foldable smartphone.

CNBC recently declared the tech firm will show off the new device later this year.

It insisted during an interview with DJ Koh, the head of Samsung’s mobile arm, the smartphone news was revealed.

Koh was quoted as saying it was “time to deliver” the new device.

Although specific details about the forthcoming hardware were few and far between, the Samsung boss appeared eager to detail the use cases of a foldable smartphone.

He told the American outlet: “You can use most of the uses on foldable status.

“But when you need to browse or see something, then you may need to unfold it. But even unfolded, what kind of benefit does that give compared to the tablet?

“If the unfolded experience is the same as the tablet, why would they consumers buy it?

“So every device, every feature, every innovation should have a meaningful message to our end customer. So when the end customer uses it, they think ‘wow, this is the reason Samsung made it’.”

And now a new report from South Korean news publication ET News, noticed by The Indian Express, has revealed the potential screen size of the new foldable phone.

The outlet insisted Samsung’s futuristic device will feature a 4.6-inch screen that is located on its rear, meaning the device can still be used when it is folded.

It added when the device is laid out the main screen will be 7.3-inches – this is the flexible part of the device that is said to be foldable.

It was predicted Samsung would make the device in a limited capacity to begin with and it could retail for as high as $1,500 (£1160.47).

Samsung’s foldable phone is expected to arrive next year, however it is unknown it if will do so in the same time frame as the Galaxy S10.
