Fans had been hoping for a trailer.
After Brie Larson teased something to “break the internet” everyone was expecting at leat a teaser clip.
Instead, Entertainment Weekly posted its newcover with the first official look at Brie Larson in her red and blue Captain Marvel uniform.
Many fans felt a little robbed, and did not hide their disappointment, but the magazine soon made up for that with a spectacular array of exclusive first images featuring all the main characters and the first proper look at the alien Kree and Skrull races.
After months of speculation Ben Mendelsohn has been shown as the shapeshifting Skrull leader Talos. There are two pictures showing him both in his alien body and masquerading as a human.
EW gives a huge plot teaser, adding: “On Earth, Mendelsohn’s Talos goes undercover as a human working within S.H.I.E.L.D.”
This ties in with the fan rumours that the Skrull have been on Earth for decades and Avengers 4 will reveal some major characters are actually Krulls in disguise.
Fans already knew that the movie would centre on the ancient war between the Kree and Skrull races. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol1 villain Ronan the Accuser had been confirmed and the new pictures show actor Lee Pace back in costume.
What is more intriguing is the confirmation that he will be part of Jude Law’s team.
Yes, Starforce is on screen for the first time in all their glory. This confirms why early on set images showed Larson as Danvers in green armour, not the blue and red Captain Marvel uniform.
Another Guardians 1 villain, Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou) is also shown aloingside newcomer Minn-Erva, played by Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan.
Captain Marvel is shown at the head of the group with two other members, assumed to be actors Rune Temte and Algenis Perez Soto.
The EW article also gives plot teasers and reveals Captain Marvel has “left her earthly life behind to join the elite military team Starforce on the Kree planet of Hala.”
One unexpected picture shows actress Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, who one of Carol Danvers’ oldest friends.
The caption adds: “She’s a top-notch Air Force pilot with the call sign “Photon,” and she’s also a single mother to a young daughter.”
in the comics, that daughter, Monica, becomes the superhero Photon. Could this picture be hinting at a new hero for Avengers 4 and the MCU Phase 4 beyond that?
