OnePlus 6 owners now have access to Android 9 Pie – Here’s how to get it on your flagship

The OnePlus 6 was released back in May and continues to feature some of the best specifications on an Android smartphone.

The hardware touts a 6.28-inch Optic AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080×2280.

OnePlus 6 is powered by a Snapdragon 845 and comes with either 6 or 8GB of RAM depending on the variant.

And an Adreno 630 GPU ensures the flagship has enough graphical prowess to blitz through the latest and greatest games available.

Express.co.uk loved the hardware when we reviewed it, awarding it a full five out of five stars.

We said: “The OnePlus 6 is an incredible phone at an even more incredible price.

“It’s fast, looks great and has a very nice display which offers a brilliantly bright and sharp viewing experience.

“The new camera offers plenty of extras including Portrait Mode and, while it’s not as good as some of the flagship rivals, still produces some good photos.”

The hardware initially launched with Android Oreo, offering users a very capable operating system.

But now OnePlus 6 owners can get their hands on the newest software from Google, Android 9 Pie.

On OnePlus’ forum it was announced an open beta for Android 9 Pie is beginning to roll out.

This means users can now experience all the new features that arrived on Pixel devices and the Essential Phone last month.

However, the Chinese manufacturer clarified the release is only of a beta version, meaning the software will not be as stable as an official release.

But if OnePlus users want to get their hands on the newest software they can download a ROM upgrade package from the company’s site.

From there they should copy the upgrade packed into their smartphone storage.

Then they should head to settings, the press system updates.

Next users should press the icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

A button for “local upgrade” will then be present – users should then press a button to install and upgrade.

The OnePlus 6 should be restarted after the successful installation of the Android 9 Pie open beta.

OnePlus also has details for how to upgrade if you are currently running the developer preview version of Android 9 Pie on its forum thread.

The Chinese firm is also asking users to report any bugs they encounter while using the open beta.

Android 9 Pie introduces a wealth of new features that radically change how Google’s operating system functions.

One of the most notable additions is Adaptive Battery that uses machine learning to analyse what applications a user takes advantage of most in order to optimally deliver power.

Such a feature should extend the battery life of all smartphones that adopt the software.
