Windows 10 users set for major update next month and here’s what’s coming to your PC

Windows 10 saw its last major update in April – back then Microsoft fans were treated to a ton of new functionality.

One of the most notable additions was what the American tech giant dubbed Timeline.

This let users to navigate specific documents and files more easily by allowing them to sweep through specific times and dates using a new tool on the right hand side of the screen.

Nearby Sharing was also added to the operating system in April – this allowed quicker and more intuitive ways to share files across multiple devices.

Any device with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi could take advantage of the function, meaning photos, videos and documents could be duplicated in seconds.

But now Microsoft has officially unveiled the next update for the hugely-popular operating system.

Previously only known as its codename, Redstone 5, the newest iteration of Windows 10 will be rolled out as the “Windows 10 October 2018 Update”.

The update will bring dramatic changes that Microsoft insists will make its software better than ever.

The tech giant is calling one of the biggest new features the “new clipboard experience” that will harness cloud technologies to allow users to seamlessly copy and paste across multiple devices.

Users are also able to pin items to their clipboard they use regularly, ensuring such content can be accessed quicker than ever.

Discussing the feature back in May, Microsoft said: “Copy paste – it’s something we all do, probably multiple times a day.

“But what do you do if you need to copy the same few things again and again? How do you copy content across your devices?

“We’re addressing that and taking the clipboard to the next level – simply press WIN+V and you’ll be presented with our brand-new clipboard experience!”

File Explorer is also set to receive a new Dark Theme as part of the October rollout.

In a recent blog post discussing the new look for the application Microsoft declared such a feature was a “top request” from users.

The tech firm noted: “We’re excited to announce that Dark Theme support for File Explorer is ready for the next major release of Windows.

“Adding a dark theme to File Explorer has long been a top Insider request. Some users find that a dark theme is easier on the eyes.

“Others simply like the fresh, new look. But while dark mode has been available in Windows for some time, it hasn’t applied to File Explorer, until now.”

Although the theme is currently available for Windows Insiders, everyone will be able to access the feature when it arrives next month.

Windows lovers will need to press the “personalisation” option before clicking “colours”.

A new option for “dark” will then be available to select under the “choose your app mode” section.

The Windows 10 Insider programme is a scheme users can sign up to – it grants access to early builds of Microsoft’s software but can come at the expense of more prominent bugs.

In addition to a fresh new look for File Explorer and cloud clipboard functionality, Microsoft Edge is also expected to come with a litany of refinements.

The Windows 10 October 2018 Update will be made available to Windows Insiders first before rolling out to everyone else.

The new software is expected to hit at the start of next month.
