Metro Ethernet – The Ethernet Technology Network of the Future

Shifting sands and changing times have been timeless witness to the never ending need of the human race for progress and development. From the invention and reinvention of the wheel, to the yet to be coded Mona Lisa, the quest by humanity has indeed known no boundaries. Following with the pattern, recent times have seen a certain technological shift of great impact on modern society as a whole. This signal has been labeled as Metro Ethernet (ME).

The new technology deploys a rather integral, inclusive and reliably holistic approach to the system of the current metro, which incorporates TDM equipment. The networking industry now looks at major growth areas with the shifting of know how. The future of how data transfers will take place, be it in organizations or just residences, rests on the future of this new enhanced form of data services.

With the advent of this new knowledge, individual end users or local area networks (LANs) can be connected to the Internet or a wide area network (WAN). The result would be that organizations and institutions like colleges, schools, government agencies and large corporations would now be able to connect their branches or campuses to the internet.

Almost since its genesis, the Ethernet was always the technology of preference for businesses and governmental agencies. Shifting and modernistic technologies have increased this step manifold as a means to advanced and improved data services being delivered in metros.

Basically, this new technology consists of a metropolitan area that enterprises of a computer network which is covered by and based on Ethernet standards. In this way, metros could be networked to connect business homes and all sorts of subscribers to much larger service networks on the World Wide Web.

The use of this newfound Carrier Ethernet technology is a much sought after and highly pursued venture today. The reason is because of the benefits that this technology has to offer by means of scalability, cost-effectiveness, bandwidth management and reliability.

You can see the importance of this technology when a global industry alliance has been set up to govern and exceed it. This alliance comprises of more than 150 organizations. It is termed as the ME Forum (MEF) and it is considered to be the principal body for Carrier Ethernet. Acceleration and worldwide acceptance of this new development is the much deserved agenda of the MEF.

There are three types of services that can be delivered because of this new expertise, as has been defined by the MEF. These are directed-multiPoint or E-TREE; virtual private LAN services (VPLS), also termed E-LAN; and virtual private wire service (VPWS), also called E-Line.

Virtual private LAN service (VPLS) and packet-leased line services will be included in this new service. The new method to deliver data across metros would encompass such transport technologies as Ethernet / WDM, Resilient Packet Ring, SONET / SDH and also next-generation SONET / SDH.

Rapidly shrinking IT budgets and an even more rapid increasing need to provisions for greater and better LAN connectivity will soon find that their answers have been met by way of Metro Ethernet.
