Royal look-alike: Who is Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, dubbed Kate Middleton look-alike?

HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has been compared to British Royal Kate Middleton on many occasions.

The pair looks remarkably similar with their long, dark hair and pale complexions.

They have also been compared by how they both came from ‘normal households’ and married into royalty.

Nicknamed the “Royal Sisters” by Chanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, the two also have very similar style.

Who is Crown Princess Mary of Denmark?

Born Mary Elizabeth Donaldson in 1972 she grew up in Hobart, Tasmania in Australia.

She is the youngest daughter of Oxford University Professor John Dalgleish Donaldson and Henrietta Clark.

The Crown Princess has a Bachelor degree of Commerce and Law from the University of Tasmania and worked in DDB Needham and Young & Rubicam in Australia before she moved to Denmark in 2002 to work for Microsoft.

She met Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in a pub named “Slip Inn” in 2000 during the Olympic Games.

Mary has previously said that the meeting was “completely random” as she received an invitation to the pub from a friend to meet some of the Spanish participants competing in the Olympic Games.

When they started speaking the Prince referred to himself as “Fred”.

Mary later said: “It was a party with a few Australians and two of the Spanish king’s nephews as well as Crown Prince Frederik, Prince Joachim, Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Princess Märtha Louise of Norway.

“I did not know who they were.”

Over the next three years the two were often seen together in both Australia and Denmark, but it wasn’t before 2003 Queen Margrethe of Denmark publicly acknowledged the relationship.

Six months later the palace announced the engagement between Mary Donaldson and Crown Prince Frederik.

The stunning Australian married her Prince on May 14, 2004 in Copenhagen and was officially made a member of the Danish Royal family.

Together the Royal Couple have four children, including a set of twins; Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

Crown Princess Mary told Hello Magazine she did not recall ever wanting to become a princess.

She said: “My biggest memory is of Diana walking up the red carpet with a very, very long train.

“But I don’t recall wishing that one day I would be a princess. I wanted to be a veterinarian.”
