New iPhones could leave behind one of Apple’s most overlooked features

Apple is expected to show off three new iPhone models at a hardware event on September 12.

Rumours have suggested one variant will be a direct successor to the current iPhone X while a second will retain an all-screen design but feature a monstrous 6.5-inch display.

The third device is said to be a cheaper iPhone model that will employ noticeable tweaks to reduce its price.

This is said to include using an LCD panel instead of the OLED present in the current iPhone X model.

And a report from Chinese website Feng back in April, that quoted from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, for KGI Securities, declared the hardware will also forgo 3D Touch.

But now it appears the feature could also be removed from all iPhones by next year.

MacRumours recently cited an analyst for Barclays, Blayne Curtis, who is understood to have recently met with businesses inside Apple’s supply chain, and declared the removal of 3D Touch is “widely understood”.

However, he admitted such plans could change before the release of new iPhones in September, 2019.

This suggests 2018 iPhone X models could be the last to tout the feature.

The iPhone 6S introduced 3D Touch back in 2015 – at the time Apple was keen to emphasise the usefulness of the functionality.

The tech giant also discussed a new mode dubbed “Peek and Pop” that allowed iPhone owners to glance at the status of applications without having the open them entirely.

At the time Jony Ive, Apple’s Chief Design Officer, said: “For iPhone 6 and 6s Plus, we’re introducing an entirely new interaction and a whole new dimension into the way you experience your iPhone.

“It’s made possible by a technology called 3D Touch, this is the next generation of multi-touch.

“For the first time, along with recognising familiar gestures iPhone also recognises force.”

3D Touch allowed users to press down harder on certain apps to access specific functions.

Pushing down on Instagram for instance would allow users to instantly create a new post, launch the camera app immediately or to access their direct messages.

However, the feature appeared to be overlooked by many iPhone users following its debut.

Although Apple’s 2019 iPhones are still far off, the company is expected to announce its 2018 models at a hardware event on September 12.
