How to set up your iPhone

Step 1

First off, you need to turn on your device. You will see “Hello” in many languages.

Follow the steps to get started.

You have the option to enable VoiceOver or Zoom from the Hello screen if you are blind or have low vision.

Step 2

Next, you have to select your language. Then tap your country or region. This affects how information looks on your device, including date, time, contacts and more.

If you have another device which is running iOS 11, you can use it to automatically set up your new device with Quick Start. Bring the two devices close together and follow the instructions.

Step 3

You have to connect your device to a Wi-FI network, cellular network or iTunes to activate and continue setting up your device.

Just select the Wi-Fi network you wish to use or choose a different option.

You might need to insert your SIM card first.

Step 4

You have the option to turn on Location Services to let apps like Find My Friends, Maps access your whereabouts.

Step 5

Next, you have the option to set up Touch ID or Face ID. With this feature, you can use your fingerprint or face recognition to unlock your device and make purchases.

You need a passcode to use features like Touch ID, Face ID and Apple Pay.

If you like a four-digit passcode, custom passcode or no passcode, tap Passcode Options.

Step 6

If you have an iCloud or iTunes backup, or an Android device, you can restore or transfer your data from your old device to your new smartphone.

Tap on Set Up as New iPhone if you don’t have another device or backup.

Step 7

Sign in with your Apple ID and set up iCloud Drive and enter your Apple ID and password.

If you have signed in with your Apple ID, you can set up iCloud Drive, Apple Pay and iCloud Keychain.

Step 8

You can set up Siri, you may need to speak a few phrases so that Siri can get to know your voice.

If you signed in with your Apple ID, follow the steps to set up Apple Pay and iCloud Keychain.

Step 9

Choose settings for app analytics, True Tone and Home button. You can choose to share information with app developers if you want.

Step 10

Tap Get Started to finish the process and start using your device.

Should you buy an iPhone X now?

The iPhone X has an all-screen design that harnesses OLED technology to deliver rich colours.

The latest phone has Apple’s TrueDepth front-facing camera system which is used for facial recognition and enhanced augmented-reality features like Animoji and more accurate Snapchat lenses.

However Apple is rumoured to be planning the release of three new iPhone models at an event on September 12.

This means Apple fans may want to hold off buying the iPhone X until they know what features the new models will boast.
