Own a Fire TV? Amazon could be about to give you more reasons to stream than ever

Amazon’s Fire TV Stick provides users with an easy-to-navigate streaming platform that gives access to Prime Video in addition to other video services such as Netflix.

The product also provides an incredibly low cost barrier for customers with the Fire TV Stick coming it at only £39.99 or £69.99 for the more premium version that supports 4K.

But it appears the tech giant could be about to give users more reasons to stream than ever thanks to a brand new video service.

A report from The Information insisted Amazon is planning to launch a “free, advertising support video service” dubbed “Free Dive”.

It said the new service would differentiate itself from Amazon’s Prime Video platform by offering content that is older by and large.

Such a move would presumably be made by the retail behemoth to justify the subscription cost for Prime Video that gives access to newer movies and TV shows in addition to live sports content.

The Information, citing people familiar with the matter, declared Amazon is currently speaking with “major studios” to licence older programmes for the new service.

The outlet claimed such a move would rival that of Roku that created its own channel last year.

The Roku Channel launched back in September and was free on supported devices but featured adverts.

Amazon’s latest move is part of the firm’s attempt to capitalise further on its lucrative advertising business, the publication added.

Cowen, a Wall Street business, claimed Amazon will create $8billion in revenue from advertising this year alone.

While this is still minute compared to the $200billion of revenue the firm is estimated to bring in this year, it represents an area Amazon seems keen to expand.

The publication estimated 48million people have access to Fire TV showcasing the swathe of people that could access the new channel.

However, it was not detailed how many of these users have a Prime membership.

It is presumed people will not need any form of Amazon membership to take advantage of the alleged channel.

However, users would surely need an Amazon device in order to access Free Dive in the first place.

Free Dive is being put together by Amazon’s IMDB subsidiary, the report added.

No release date for the new channel has been officially confirmed.
