Crazy Rich Asians reviews: What do critics say about Crazy Rich Asians? UK release date

Crazy Rich Asians is the Asian-led romantic comedy topping box offices in the USA.

With a huge cast of veteran actors and newcomers alike, Crazy Rich Asians has been lauded as a first important step in representation on screen.

Starring Constance Wu and Henry Golding as the romantic leads, the movie is still two weeks away from landing in UK cinemas.

Until then, fans in the UK have plenty of time to hone their expectations with the flurry of reviews from the other side of the pond.

What are the Crazy Rich Asians reviews like?

Steven Scaife wrote for The Verge: “Crazy Rich Asians was never going to please everyone, but by being entertaining and uncompromising, it’s stood up to unfair expectations and demands”

Another assessment comes from Tara McNamara of Common Sense Media who wrote: “This movie will make you fall in love with romantic comedies again.”

Crazy Rich Asians opened better than any romcom since Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck in 2015.

Those who eschew the romcom genre are set straight by Rolling Stone writer Peter Travers: “Why feel guilty around such irresistible fun? And if it’s also a win for representation, so much the better.”

Screen Rant gave a no holds barred glowing review, writing: “Crazy Rich Asians is a spectacular, heartwarming instant classic of a romantic comedy that brings some much-needed representation to the genre.”

Not only does the movie get points with Screen Rant for its representation, it scores big on book-to-movie accuracy.

“It’s a testament to the story and script that Crazy Rich Asians doesn’t fall into the traps of many book-to-screen adaptations, and instead seamlessly transitions into a big studio rom-com,” Screen Rant’s Molly Freeman wrote.

“Ultimately, all aspects of Crazy Rich Asians come together for an over-the-top, spectacular romantic comedy that provides perfect escapist fantasy,”

“But, of course, the movie isn’t without plenty of heart to balance its more fanciful moments,” Freeman added.

For the New York Times, A. O. Scott wrote: “Without betraying any overt nostalgia, Crazy Rich Asians casts a fond eye backward as well as Eastward, conjuring a world defined by hierarchies and prescribed roles in a way that evokes classic novels and films.

“Its keenest romantic impulse has less to do with Nick and Rachel’s rather pedestrian love story than with the allure of endless luxury and dynastic authority. Which I guess is pretty modern after all.”

When is Crazy Rich Asians out in the UK?

Crazy Rich Asians will be out in UK cinemas on Friday, September 14, 2018.
