Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic admission made by Kyle Edmund before US Open

Edmund begins his US Open campaign against Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi and he will be looking to go deep after a strong showing to date this season in the Majors which saw him reach the Australian Open semi-finals.

The 23-year-old represents Britain’s best chance of Grand Slam success in the men’s side of the draw with Andy Murray’s season disrupted by a troublesome hip.

Edmund was named in Bjorn Borg’s six-man Team Europe for the Laver Cup along with Federer and Djokovic.

And he has revealed that he is looking forward to participating in the competition with the tennis greats.

“You have to enjoy your tennis career as much as possible and when you have opportunities to play alongside Novak and Roger then you have to grasp it because when you look back it will be a great memory,” he said.

“I know my team-mates a little bit from chatting in the changing rooms and I’ve played Novak a few times and practiced with Roger.”

Edmund, who lost last week in the quarter-finals of the Winston Salem-Open to Steve Johnson is desperate for a good fortnight in New York.

“After the US Open it’s like the home straight and it’s important to finish strongly and not let it fade away,” he added.

“I’ve had the best year of my career.

“The key to being a good tennis player is to have a consistent year.

“The tennis calendar is hectic these days and it will be busy.

“But it’s the last push towards the end of the year with the two team competitions. I want to play Davis Cup but it depends how I do.”

Edmund is currently ranked 16th in the world.
