eBay: ‘Rare’ Charles Dickens £2 coin just listed is worth £3,500 – and YOU could have one

eBay is the world’s largest online auction site, used by sellers and collectors all around the world.

Many rare and collectable items end up on eBay’s books, including a plethora of rare British coins.

While some are dusty old pennies and out-of-date coins, others are currently circulating, and worth thousands of pounds.

One coin that has been newly listed on eBay is a rare Charles Dickens £2 coin, selling for a staggering £3,500.

The coin was listed this afternoon by eBay user “sc52ter”, who is based in Middlesbrough and boasts 100 per cent positive feedback.

Looking to attract potential buyers, the listing was titled: “Charles Dickens 2012 £2 Two Pound Coin VERY RARE Royal Mint ERRORS”.

The coin has a staggering buy it now price of £3,500, but the seller is also open to lower offers, giving buyers the opportunity to offer less than the asking price.

Giving me detail away in the listing’s description, the seller wrote: “Charles Dickens 2012 £2 Two Pound Coin VERY RARE Royal Mint ERRORS.

“Charles Dickens 2012 £2 Two Pound Coin. VERY RARE Royal Mint ERRORS.

“1. Around Queen Elizabeth,s head the dots disappear half way round (as seen in photo)

“2. The milled wording around the coin is upside down.

“Item will be shipped recorded/signed for delivery.”

Only listed for a couple of hours, the coin is already causing a stir on eBay, with the site marking it as a “hot item”, attracting four views an hour.

The coin was designed by Matthew Dent in 2012, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of one of Britain’s most famous and beloved writers.

The £2 coin features the profile of Dickens’ face, made up of titles of his famous works. It features the inscription, “Something will turn up”.

Charles Dickens is regarded as the greatest writers of the Victorian era, creating fictional characters such as Oliver Twist and David Copperfield that are well-known and loved all over the world.

Despite the high selling price of the coin, according to scarcity index CheckYourChange.co.uk, the Charles Dickens £2 coin is actually quite common.

With a mintage for circulation of 8,190,00, it is rated one for collectibility and scarcity, the lowest rating.

The seller could have decided the coin’s listing price after seeing the same Charles Dickens £2 coin actually sell for £3,500 on eBay earlier this month.

One seller that has made money from this coin is Middlesbrough-based user, climbing_uk.

The eBay user sold two rare coins on eBay for a staggering £3,500, with both described as having “minting errors”.
