Liverpool news: Gary Neville discusses Alisson signing – ‘I thought this was strange’

Liverpool landed Alisson from Roma in July with the Brazil international moving to Anfield in a huge £66million transfer.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to life on Merseyside, keeping three clean sheets against West Ham, Crystal Palace and Brighton.

Liverpool were previously determined to keep faith with Karius in the wake of his Champions League nightmare, while also keeping Mignolet on the books.

And Sky Sports pundit Neville thinks Klopp made the right decision to twist, rather than stick, with Liverpool now widely expected to challenge for honours.

He said: “At the end of last season when Jurgen Klopp said he was going to keep faith with the two goalkeepers he had, I thought it was strange.

“I didn’t see how that could happen if Liverpool were going to genuinely challenge for the title.

“I watched Alisson and he looked good with his feet, though a few things came off him from parrying.

“He passed his first test against Crystal Palace and I’m not necessarily looking forward to watching him, but I chose him in terms of answering the questions that need to be answered in a new league.”

Alisson’s impact at Liverpool has also not gone unnoticed by Reds team-mate Andy Robertson.

Robertson said: “He’s been brilliant since he came in.

“It’s no disrespect to Loz [Loris Karius] or Si [Mignolet], but he’s been brilliant since he came in and I’m sure the lads said the same with the other ‘keepers when they first came in.

“He’s a real presence at the back, you can see him coming out for corners and crosses and you’ve seen his wee chip got applause from the crowd, but I’m not sure if the gaffer wants to see that too many times!

“But fair play to him and that’s the confidence he’s playing with and it breeds onto the defence.

“When we needed him he came alive and palmed it away.

“Fair play to him so far, he’ll be delighted with three clean sheets and long may it continue.”

Liverpool are next in action against Leicester on September 1.
