John McCain death: President Trump and Barack Obama share their condolences

President Donald Trump, followed by former US President Barack Obama, have shared their tributes and condolences for the Senator’s death.

Donald Trump offered Senator McCain’s family his blessing to the politician’s family on Twitter.

The President wrote: “My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain.

“Our hearts and prayers are with you!”

The office of Barack and Michelle Obama also released a statement on the passing of the US veteran.

The former President wrote: “John McCain and I were members of different generations, came from completely different backgrounds and competed at the highest level of politics.

“But we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher – the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched and sacrificed.”

Mr Obama went on claiming that “few of us have been tested John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did”.

He added: “But all of us can aspire to the course to put the greater good above our own.

“At John’s best, he showed us what that means.

“And for that, we are all in his debt.

“Michelle and I send our most heartfelt condolences to Cindy and their family.”

The news of Senator McCain’s death does not come as a surprise as on Friday his family said in an announcement that Mr McCain had decided to stop treatment for the brain cancer he had been battling for over a year.

Mr McCain had been fighting with glioblastoma, which is the most aggressive cancer that begins within the brain, since July 2017.

A statement from the Senator’s office confirmed the Senator was surrounded by his wife Cindy and his family when he passed.

The statement also noted: “At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years.”
