Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho, Spurs and Liverpool claim made by Savage – fans will agree

Manchester United boss Mourinho is under pressure ahead of the Red Devils’ Premier League clash with Tottenham on Monday night.

The 55-year-old has cut an increasingly frustrated figure at Old Trafford, fuelling talk he could be set for the axe.

Manchester United have backed Mourinho to come good but the brutal fact is they lack the same attacking stardust as rivals Liverpool and Tottenham.

And Savage thinks the Red Devils manager is receiving too much harsh criticism, particularly given how Pochettino and Klopp are yet to win a trophy at their respective clubs.

Tottenham have finished second under Pochettino and made the FA Cup semi-finals last term.

Klopp, meanwhile, has lost EFL Cup, Europa League and Champions League finals throughout his time at Liverpool.

And Savage thinks criticism of Mourinho is unwarranted.

Writing in his column for the Mirror, the former Premier League midfielder said: “Mourinho’s track record deserves more respect than the hammering he’s been taking from some quarters.

“He’s won nine major trophies in English football where Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino have won none – yet they can do no wrong and the United manager is being slaughtered after just TWO games of the season.

“By the way, Klopp and Pochettino are both doing a fantastic job.

“But it appears that Mourinho is being judged by a different set of rules to his rivals.

“I don’t care about the argument that he has failed to get the best out of Pogba – because Pogba himself is part of the problem.”

Pochettino, meanwhile, has insisted he is under the same pressure as Mourinho.

The Tottenham boss said: “You don’t believe I’m not in the same position? We feel the pressure every week.

“Of course the circumstances are different over the year but every game you play you’re under pressure and if you lose or don’t perform as you expect, the pressure touches you.

“We are always under pressure. It’s impossible to relax – I’m only relaxed in summer when I spent a week with family and friends.

“Many things happen – and you know better than me it’s impossible to relax and not feel that pressure.

“At Tottenham, Southampton, Espanyol the people are judging you, talking about your decisions.

“When you win, all the people knew you were so good. When you lose all the people knew the manager was wrong.

“In the Premier League, we’re so exposed to you [the media] and the fans. In England, the manager is so important. In all the clubs you feel a similar pressure.

“I don’t know [if it is worse at Man United] – I was never Man Utd manager. I promise you it was similar at Southampton and Espanyol.”
