‘No concessions’ – Trump vows to STAND STRONG against Turkey amid row over US pastor

In an interview on Monday, President Trump said he believed he had an agreement for the pastor to be freed.

This was after the US leader arranged a deal with Israel to free a Turkish citizen being detained in the country.

President Trump thought this would be sufficient to ensure the release of Andrew Brunson, an American evangelical pastor who has been detained in Turkey since 2016, after being accused of playing a role in the 2016 coup attempt.

Commenting on the issue, President Trump said: “I got that person out for him. I expect him to let this very innocent and wonderful man and great father and great Christian out of Turkey.

“I like Turkey. I like the people of Turkey very much, but it can’t be a one-way street. It’s no longer a one-street for the United States.”

Turkish citizen Ebru Ozkan was deported from Israel on the 15th July after being held on suspicion of smuggling funds for Hamas.

President Erdogan had repeatedly expressed his interest for Ms Ozkan to return safely to Turkey.

According to a senior White House official, President Erdogan and President Trump discussed the case in mid-July and spoke about how they could move things forward regarding the situation of Mr Brunson.

President Trump has since declared that he kept his side of the bargain in the deal for both the Turkish citizen and Mr Brunson to be released, but accused Turkey of failing to do the same.

The US leader expressed his anger at the ongoing incarceration of Mr Brunson, saying: “I think it’s very sad what Turkey is doing.

“I think they’re making a terrible mistake. There will be no concessions.”

In response to President Erdogan’s lack of willingness to free Mr Brunson, President Trump imposed tariffs on imports of Turkish steel and aluminium earlier this month.

Turkey has subsequently faced economic turmoil, with the Turkish lira falling sharply against the US dollar.

However President Trump dismissed these concerns, stating: “I’m not concerned at all. I’m not concerned. This is the proper thing to do.”

Whether Trump will achieve his aim of securing the release of Mr Brunson remains to be seen.
