Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho slammed over TWO crucial signings

The duo were played together in central defence on Sunday, as Manchester United were downed 3-2 by Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Neither Lindelof or Bailly looked comfortable in a performance littered with defensive errors, and the latter gave away a penalty in the first half to allow Pascal Gross to score from the spot.

Mourinho bemoaned the fact United didn’t sign a centre-half during the transfer window after seeing interest in Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld come to nothing.

But former Red Devil Paul Ince believes the Portuguese coach cannot moan about his defensive options after personally signing Bailly and Lindelof.

“He spoke about not getting the centre-halves,” he told Match of the Day 2.

“Has he got the players he wanted to get in?

“He bought the two centre-halves and I don’t think he got them right.

“[Chris] Smalling didn’t play [against Brighton], [Phil] Jones is injured.

“I’m not sure he’s got the right partnership.”

United’s defeat has called into question their Premier League title credentials this season.

And Ince believes the club must improve during the rest of the campaign.

“This is Manchester United. We expect better,” he added.

“You’re not always going to play well as a team.

“I’ve watched that game and I’m trying to work out what the tactics were.

“I didn’t know how Manchester United were setting up, what their game plan was. I saw it with Brighton.

“There was no cohesion, no pattern of play. What are they trying to do? What is their identity?”

United next take on Tottenham in the Premier League next Monday evening.
