CRYSTAL PALACE 0-0 LIVERPOOL

30: Liverpool starting to shift through the gears now. Salah prods it through to Keita, who forces a good save from Hennessey at his near post. The corner comes to nothing.

27: Woodwork! Where did that come from?! Liverpool twice give the ball away in their own half and nearly pay the price as Andros Townsend cuts inside and rattles the crossbar from 30-yards.

24: What a ball! Keita nicks the ball off Zaha and then turns him out of the stadium before launching an outrageous pass forward to Salah. The Egyptian finds himself one-on-one with Hennessey but lobs the ball a few feet over. That would have been 1-0 last season.

22: Liverpool have the ball in the back of the net but it’s been disallowed it. Mane, Hennessey and Wan-Bissaka all collide when challenging for a 50/50 ball. Probably the right call.

21: Mohamed Salah fails to make the most of a error at the back from Palace. The ball kindly falls his way but he can’t adjust his feet quickly enough and Tompkins recovers.

18: OK, sign me up for the Wan-Bissaka fan club. The 20-year-old full-back somehow outpaced Sadio Mane before tackling him on the byline. Keeping up with Mane is no easy task.

15: Wilfried Zaha wins a free kick in the Crystal Palace half as Joe Gomez stops the Eagles from counter attacking. Liverpool know Wilf will be the key tonight. Stop him, stop Palace.

13: The hosts have started to settle down now and have seen more of the ball. They’ve got created anything of note with Benteke being handled by Van Dijk and Gomez.

Robertson collects a pass from Mane before sailing a low cross into the six-yard box, but it’s too close to Hennessey.

10: Trent Alexander-Arnold swings a cross in from the right but he’s skewed it behind for a goal kick. No Nathaniel Clyne in the squad tonight, so it looks like the right back position is his to lose.

8: Have Crystal Palace done their homework? West Ham attempted a high defensive line against Liverpool last week and that didn’t exactly go well. The Eagles are attempting the same this evening. We’ll see if they fare any better.

5: And there’s the threat. Mohamed Salah finds himself one-on-one with Sakho but the Crystal Palace centre-back stands the Egyptian up before winning it back.

Quite an ominous sight for the hosts. They can’t afford to concede chances so easily.

3: Nice and gentle start to proceedings? Yeah right. Both sides are going for it with high pressing and numbers committing forward. The crowd are already of referee Michael Oliver’s back when he misses a Keita foul near the penalty area.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-0 LIVERPOOL

1: And we’re underway folks. I’ve just asked for predictions around the office. We’ve got a 2-0, 2-1, and 2-2…

I didn’t bother asking the Crystal Palace supporter. He’s too nervous to answer questions.

ATMOSPHERE…

19:57: It’s a clinched statement but the atmosphere at Selhurst Park really is tremendous. They are making some real noise as the players emerge from the tunnel.

Great atmosphere and cheerleaders? Where do I sign up.

WHERE’S YER SHIRT?!

19:54: Gary Neville has opted against wearing a Liverpool shirt on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football coverage.

And it’s safe to say fans are not impressed after the Manchester United hero lost a bet to fellow pundit Jamie Carragher.

Gary Neville and Carragher put donning their old rivals’ jerseys on the line at Sky Sports’ Premier League launch earlier this month.

And it was Neville who lost the bet as he failed to save Carragher’s penalty and the Liverpool legend stopped his own.

Neville decided not to wear a Liverpool shirt when he appeared alongside Carragher for the opening game of the Premier League campaign as United hosted Leicester.

He has once again opted against donning a Reds jersey ahead of Liverpool’s showdown with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

BENCH…

19:50: Haseeb below makes a good point. I was just scrolling through the substitutes; Henderson, Sturridge, Moreno, Lallana, Mignolet, Shaqiri, Matip…

Only Manchester City can better that with Sane, Otamendi, Walker, Mahrez and Sterling against Huddersfield yesterday.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Neil: I’m an Everton supporter and even I’m looking forward to watching this Liverpool team tonight.

Haseeb: For the first time, maybe in 28 years, we have a strong Liverpool bench. All signs of the title winning season.

Derek: I love the way Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher can have a full-blooded debate, without it getting to the awkward stage where it’s like being at a friend’s house and their parents start arguing.

Spot on, Derek. For those not watching Monday Night Football, the pair have been arguing about Unai Emery at Arsenal and why he should/shouldn’t stick to his principals.

SLUMP…

19:45: Crystal Palace have lost each of their last three home league games against Liverpool – it’s their longest losing home run against the Reds in league competition.

I’m not sure what you’re supposed to do with that information. Enjoy…

GET UP, STAND UP

19:40: Jurgen Klopp expects his Liverpool old boys to rise to the challenge as new arrivals continue to raise the bar at Anfield.

“We talk about Naby Keita, that’s good, he’s new. The world is like that. When it’s new it’s fantastic,” he said. “What you already have ‘yeah, I’m still here too’. James Milner made big steps in the last three years, that’s the truth.

“I don’t want to judge his career but it feels like it’s the best moment of his career. Gini Wijnaldum, no-one speaks about him. He can play the ‘six’ and the ‘eight’ in the way I don’t know many players can. They don’t talk about him.

“We only spoke about these three but Fabinho didn’t play a minute so far and we expect big things from him. Adam Lallana, a long time injured. There’s Xherdan Shaqiri too.”

KARIUS TO BESIKTAS

19:35: Loris Karius is on the verge of leaving Liverpool on a two-year loan with Besiktas reportedly agreeing terms.

The Times’ Paul Joyce reports Liverpool have reached an agreement with Besiktas for Karius to join the Turkish club on a two-year loan.

Besiktas sold first-choice goalkeeper Fabri to Fulham in the summer transfer window but hadn’t found an adequate replacement.

But BipSpor journalist Ibrahim Steten claims they have finally found their man with Karius set to arrive at the Super Lig club. It is said Besiktas will pay Liverpool a loan fee of €2m (£1.8m).

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Jaylock: Is it time for another Crystanbul?-the famous 3-3 draw between Liverpool and Crystal Palace…..I need hat-ticks from Salah and Zaha and Firmino should assist all six goals.

Alex: Don’t care what anyone says, Crystal Palace away is the biggest game of Liverpool’s season. It’s make or break, lads.

Zeal: Hoping for a straight forward win today for Liverpool, get the early season momentum going and wins on the board.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA

19:28: Roy Hodgson insists no-one at Crystal Palace will overhype the impact of hot prospect Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Sorry Roy, but Dan (featured in our Twitter round-up below) has already overhyped the 20-year-old to death.

Croydon-born England Under-20s full-back Wan-Bissaka broke through at Palace last term and excelled in the south Londoners’ 2-0 Premier League win at Fulham.

“It’s always nice when one of your players has a good game and captures the headlines as a result of it,” said Hodgson, of Wan-Bissaka. “So I’m very happy for him in that respect.

“But I still think it’s better for us to be allowing him to continue to learn his trade, continue to prosper, without trying to raise him up on pedestals to then saw the legs off the pedestals when it suits.”

FAB IS… FAB

19:25: Apologies for the lack of creativity in my headlines, I had a heavy weekend. What I’m trying to say is that summer signing Fabinho, who arrived from Monaco for £39million, is fine with the competition for places.

“When I came to Liverpool I knew this competition would exist in midfield and I think it’s really good for the team,” the Brazil midfielder said.

‘THE MOST WORRIED I’VE BEEN’

19:20: Gary Neville says he’s worried about Liverpool. That’s an understatement because he looks darn panicked if you ask me!

Liverpool are the second favourites with the bookies to win the Premier League for the first time.

And, speaking ahead of the Reds’ trip to Crystal Palace tonight, Neville said, as a Manchester United man, they have the best chance in a long time.

“Historically for the last 20-odd years I’ve never felt a threat to be honest with you,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “I’ve always thought they lacked something.

“Not just quality of players, sometimes they’ve had the quality of players. It’s mainly been the strength in depth and level of investment of others that has been Liverpool’s problem.

“I generally feel this season there is the quality of player and there has been the investment. For me, it’s the most worried that I’ve been as a Manchester United person for probably 30 years in terms of Liverpool’s spirit, their quality and their depth.”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Bashar: For those people who are asking why there’s no Fabinho tonight. Don’t forget that Andrew Robertson didn’t play earlier in last season. So no worries.

Dan: Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Give him another deal until 2030. Insert a £127m release clause in his contract. Award him the Freedom of Croydon and ban any non Crystal Palace fans from suddenly putting him in their fantasy teams. What a talent he is! He’s going to be unreal this season.

Callum: Jurgen Klopp taking time to integrate new signings is nothing new. Did the same for Andrew Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain last year. Nothing to worry about.

That’s Dan there, the honorary chairman of the Aaron Wan-Bissaka fan club…

MOHAMED ‘LETHAL’ SALAH

19:15: Roy Hodgson has made a bold prediction. He thinks Mohamed Salah will be just as dangerous this season as he was last term.

Yeah, really putting your neck on the line there, Roy…

“There’s no doubt in my mind that he will be good this season because of the qualities he possesses,” said Hodgson. “But of course for him and his club, people will keep cranking up expectations and that’s not a great thing to have to deal with either for the player or the club.

“You’re playing against players who cost a lot of money, players who have a very strong pedigree, players whose technical ability is very good, whose physical capacity is good.

“I don’t know that you can necessarily stop them for 90 minutes from getting anywhere near your goal – that might be too strong an objective.”

MNF…

19:10: Sky Sports’ flagship programme Monday Night Football returns for the first time this season.

Jamie Carragher is back from his long-term suspension and Gary Neville is alongside.

The Manchester United legend has already made Liverpool supporters happy after saying that the Reds boast the best front three in the Premier League, that includes Manchester City.

TEAM NEWS

19:05: The team news and line-ups are easy tonight. Both Crystal Palace and Liverpool are unchanged.

Alisson starts between the sticks with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez the chosen centre-back partnership. Joel Matip makes the bench while Dejan Lovren, the best defender in the world, isn’t available.

Roy Hodgson continues with the same side who beat Fulham last weekend. German midfielder Max Meyer and Swansea signing Jordan Ayew are on the bench and could make their debuts.

EVENING…

18:50: It’s the welcome return of Monday night football as Liverpool and Crystal Palace go head-to-head at Selhurst Park.

I couldn’t be happier to have football back on a Monday.

If, like me, you’ve spent weeks being forced to watch Who Do You Think You Are and Made In Chelsea you would be delighted too!

Anyway, tonight’s could help us see whether Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are genuine title rivals for Manchester City, or merely playing for second-place.

Team news and line-ups will be with us shortly. Standby…

CRYSTAL PALACE vs LIVERPOOL

Max Meyer could make his Crystal Palace debut on Monday. The summer signing from Schalke missed last weekend’s 2-0 win at Fulham as he fought for full match fitness.

Liverpool could bring Joel Matip into their squad. Defender Matip has not played for the club since March but is back in training after hip trouble and may feature on the bench, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in place.
