Gary Neville: Sky Sports pundit responds to Jamie Carragher over Liverpool shirt bet

Neville and Carragher have forged a reputation as one of TV’s top punditry duos following their appearances together on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

And they are scheduled to appear live tomorrow night as Carragher’s old side Liverpool visit Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville is under pressure to honour a bet he made with his sidekick in which he promised to wear a Liverpool shirt if he lost.

But he has responded in no uncertain terms tonight when the prospect of donning the jersey of United’s biggest rivals was put to him.

Jamie Carragher tweeted Neville a picture of a Liverpool shirt bearing the name and number of Xherdan Shaqiri, along with a message from the winger.

But Neville is clearly in no mood to wear the shirt and he replied with an emoji of the middle finger swearing gesture.

The message written by Shaqiri, who Carragher has revealed Neville is not a fan of, called on the Sky Sports pundit to not renege on the bet.

“To my number 1 fan Gary,” it read. “Please don’t track back SORRY, please don’t back track on this bet, Xherdan Shaqiri.”

Carragher’s tweet prompted more than 240 responses as it was shared on Twitter, one of which he retweeted.

“I hope Gary wears it, then it’s auctioned off for a mutual charity,” said the Twitter user.

“So much attention on this shirt, it could make money for a good cause. Plus it’d be great to see!!”

Carragher went on to back a suggestion that the proceeds of a charitable auction of the shirt could go to two fan-run food banks, saying: “Great idea! He can’t back out now!!”

Neville opted against replying again, but was happy to knock back Sky Sports presenter David Jones’ suggestion that Monday Night Football represents a pitting of wits between himself and Carragher.

“Exciting #SuperSunday and it’s back to London for our first @SkySportsMNF of the season Palace v Liverpool … @Carra23 v @GNev2,” wrote Jones.

And Neville replied, “V? Back With” followed by the shrugging man emoji.

Whether Neville will be forced to honour his bet with Carragher remains to be seen.

But fans can be sure the former Liverpool defender will not let his Sky Sports colleague rest until he does.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher bet

Here’s a rundown of the conversation at Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage launch event which led to the bet between Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

Neville: “What’s the bet [on the penalties] by the way? There’s got to be something on this.”

Carragher: “Get you a better shirt?”

Neville: “My shirt is fine. You’ve got to wear a United shirt or I’ve got to wear a Liverpool shirt.”

Carragher: “Yeah, go on.”

After scoring, Carragher said: “That’s a Liverpool shirt – I’ll even buy it.

“23 Carragher on the back. No, I’ll tell you who’ll we’ll get, 23 Shaqiri on the back, he hates Shaqiri.”

Carragher subsequently saved Neville’s penalty before dispatching his own.

That led Neville to say: “I’m not wearing a Liverpool shirt, I’m refusing to wear a Liverpool shirt.”
