I recently found an interesting game on the Apple App Store. It’s called REBUS – Absurd Logic Puzzle by Jutiful. For those who don’t know what a rebus is, it’s when you take images or words and combine them to make a word that’s completely different, but can be understood from the relationship between the two words.
For instance, if you take the letter “M” and place it on the word “DAY,” you get M on DAY, or “Monday.”
Some of the puzzles are very straightforward, like that one. But others can be more obtuse. For instance, an example given in the tutorial says that a coat hanger is a “tab.” I never heard a coat hanger called a tab before, so this was very confusing. I still don’t know where they got that from, and neither do any of my friends who I’ve asked.
I also had a lot of issues with the keyboard, where the keys were unresponsive. Because of this, I experienced a lot more frustration than necessary. I wish they would have let us use the iPhone’s keyboard or at least refined their own more. The way it stands, I had to type very slowly and carefully to avoid making any typos.
But there’s still a decent game to be had here. The artwork is stylish and colorful. The layout for the levels is also quite nice. If you like brain teasers, this is a game you would likely enjoy. But if you get frustrated easily, you might feel like giving up.
Luckily, the game is completely free to download and try. You’ll get thirteen packs of eight levels to play. When you finish those, you can buy three more packs for just 99 cents. So you do get a lot of bang for your buck, as long as you don’t buy a lot of hints.
There are also a lot of pop-up ads, which can be annoying. But you can pay to remove those for a dollar. You can also spend five dollars and unlock all the levels and remove ads at the same time. So there are options if you don’t want to wait until you can figure them all out.
