Susan Boyle was born and raised in Blackburn, West Lothian, with her parents quickly discovering she was a musical child.
As a young girl, Susan took singing lessons and took part in Edinburgh Fringe, participating in church choirs and auditioning for musicals.
In 1999, she submitted a track for a charity CD to commemorate the millennium, making it onto the album.
She also recorded her own CDs, using her savings to pay for a professionally cut demo, sending it into record companies, radio talent competitions, local and national TV.

Her debut album became the fastest selling debut album in the UK, selling 411,820 copies in its first week.
Almost eight years on and Susan has six albums under her belt, with another set for later this year.
Her second album, The Gift, reportedly earned her a whopping £1.8 million ($2.4 million), with her 2011 album Someone To Watch Over Me earning her another £332,000 ($425,000).
Susan starred alongside Hans Matheson, Sylvester McCoy, Samantha Barks and Lesley Manville in the film The Christmas Candle, which earned more than $2 million on box office.
In 2013 she launched her first concert tour in 2013, eponymously titled Susan Boyle, and the tour saw Susan travel across the UK and also the US.
Her most valuable asset is reported to be her house in Blackburn, which was £391,000 ($500,000) when she bought it.
