Lonah Salpeter: The AWKWARD moment 5000m runner thought she won gold

Great Britain supporters had their eyes on Eilish McColgan and whether or not she would be able to finish in the medals at the European Championships.

But their eyes were averted as the final bell rang for the last lap when a bizarre incident occurred.

Salpeter was leading the race and strangely began to sprint towards the line as the ball tolled.

And it became apparent that she thought she had won the gold medal!

The 29-year-old put her head in her hands as she slowed to a halt and grinned, before swiftly realising her mistake.

But by then it was too late as her competitors raced past her, leaving Salpeter with too much to do.

As Sifan Hassan and McColgan breezed past her, Salpeter was in a race to hold on to bronze but Yasemin Can quickly got past.

Salpeter looked emotionally spent as she crossed the finish line fourth a lap later and collapsed to the floor bursting into tears.
