Manchester United will face off against Leicester City today as the Premier League 2018/19 season gets underway this evening at Old Trafford.

This is the second season in a row that Leicester City have played the opening day of the new Premier League campaign.

Last time round Leicester played Arsenal for the opening fixture of the 2017/18 season, and that turned out to be a thriller.

Arsenal ended up winning that match 4-3 – could we see similar fireworks as Manchester United and Leicester City face off today?

Manchester United’s big summer signing Fred – who was signed for a reported £52million fee – could start against Leicester City tonight.

But a number of other Red Devils players will miss out with Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Diogo Dalot, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic all injured.

It remains to be seen whether Manchester United stars who returned late from the World Cup will feature in Jose Mourinho’s squad.

One of those is Paul Pogba, who was in France’s World Cup winning team and was linked with a move away from United this summer transfer window.

While Leicester City’s Harry Maguire was linked with a move to Manchester United, with a reported £75million asking price placed on the defender.

Speaking after the move failed to materialise, Leicester City boss Claude Puel said: “[Harry is] a different character, of course, but it’s a different situation.

“Riyad was at the club for many years and he was 27, perhaps the last opportunity for him to play for Manchester City.

“For Harry it’s new. It’s a good possibility for him to confirm with us, with good ambition with his team-mates and to continue to perform.

“He will continue to play with his national team and will stay at a high level.

“It was his first season with Leicester and it’s important, and he understands this, that he remains with the club for the owner for a new season and we will see after that.”

Manchester United have had an up-and-down pre-season, with a win against Real Madrid a high point and a heavy defeat to Liverpool a low.

After the match against the Reds, Mourinho said the game against his club’s bitter rivals “gave me nothing at all”.

The Manchester United manager also said if he was a fan he would not have paid to watch the match.

But speaking ahead of the Premier League opener against Leicester Mourinho gave his squad a rallying call.

He said: “Now it’s serious stuff. It’s not anymore about friendlies, it’s not anymore about preparation, it’s about points.

“Any point can be crucial – you don’t know what is going to happen at the end of the season.

“You have to try your best to get points and even with the difficulties that we had with our pre-season, now I don’t think is the time to be speaking about that.

“It’s time just to say ‘tomorrow we have a Premier League match’ and we have to play to win it.”
