Rangers transfer news: Brighton line up James Tavernier swoop to beat deadline

He could be joined at the Ibrox exit by Josh Windass – the subject of a £1.4m offer from Ipswich Town – Greg Docherty and Jak Alnwick.

Premier League side Brighton have been tracking right-back Tavernier for months and are ready to make their move before tomorrow’s 5pm deadline.

The 26-year old has been preparing to lead Rangers into Europa League action against Maribor tomorrow night, but that could all change if a concrete bid lands on Steven Gerrard’s desk.

The Liverpool legend understands the lure of the English top flight better than anyone, and Tavernier may also fancy another crack at it.

The defender was unable to make a significant breakthrough at Newcastle and Wigan earlier in his career but is now in a stronger position to give it a go after two seasons at Ibrox.

Tavernier is happy at Rangers but the chance to star in the world’s richest league may be too good an opportunity to turn down.

Windass, meanwhile, is considering joining Championship side Ipswich.

Rangers had been looking for £3m, but £1.4m is on the table and could be readily accepted.

Docherty is set to sign a season-long loan deal at Shrewsbury Town.

Midfielder Docherty is not part of Gerrard’s plans for this season and will be allowed to join the League One outfit to get game time before his future is reassessed next summer.

Rangers back-up keeper Alnwick could also leave on loan for Championship side Bristol City.

If Tavernier goes, Jon Flanagan would switch flanks to his preferred right-back slot, with new signing Borna Barisic slotting straight in at left-back. In the short term, Declan John would play at left-back against Maribor as Barisic is ineligible.
