Portugal fire: SOLDIERS brought in to fight scorching blaze after THOUSANDS evacuated

The soldiers joined more than 1,000 firefighters who were still tackling the blaze in on Tuesday, five days after the fire began.

Authorities told locals on Monday that the fire was 95 percent contained.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa played down fears of a repeat of last year’s devastating wildfires which killed 64 people and injured more than 250 in the central town of Pedrogao Grande alone.

He said: “This is a confined and limited situation. That is undoubtedly the difference to what happened last year.”

Temperatures reached 115F (46C) in some parts of Portugal over the weekend.

The Macdonald Monchique Resort and Spa was evacuated on Sunday night as hundreds of tourists were bussed to hotels in the resort of Portimao a half-hour drive south on the coast.

Villages near to Monchique – including Portela do Vento and Odemira – were evacuated.

A 72-year-old woman – one of 24 people injured – was airlifted to hospital in Lisbon in a serious condition.

The Monchique wildfire broke out in a eucalyptus forest around 1.30pm in an area called Perna da Negra in the wake of a heatwave which have seen temperatures soar to 46 degrees Celsius (114.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in some parts of the country.

In Spain the heatwave has been linked to three deaths, two in Murcia in the south-east and one in Barcelona.

Seven people needed hospital treatment for smoke inhalation in the municipality of La Codosera in the province of Badajoz near Spain’s border with Portugal on Saturday as temperatures soared to 43 degrees Celsius (109.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Foreign Office has updated their latest travel advice today (6 August).

They warn: “A major forest fire in the area of Monchique, in the Algarve has been burning for a number of days.

“The fire continues to burn in the area surrounding Monchique. The Portuguese authorities are evacuating the affected areas.

“If you’re in the area, follow the instructions of the Portuguese police and Civil Protection authorities.”

Travelling to Monchique area is “not advised” at this time. It follows the warning regarding the temperature warning, which have advised that there was an “increased risk of forest fires”.
