H1Z1 PS4 UPDATE: Battle Royale shooter officially leaves open beta, becomes free-to-play

H1Z1 on the PS4 has today reached a big landmark – leaving open beta to officially become a free-to-play game.

H1Z1 first launched in open beta back in May and within the first 24 hours was played by more than 1.5million people.

At the end of June it hit the 10million player marker, up from 4.5million by the time May finished.

And now, over two months since H1Z1 first arrived on open beta on PS4, it is officially launching.

H1Z1 producer Terrence Yee said: “Everyone here at Daybreak Games is thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response to H1Z1’s debut on PS4.

“Ten million new players in our first month in open beta is an incredible milestone, and our entire development team has worked tirelessly to build on that early success.

“We’re beyond excited to officially launch H1Z1 on PS4—this is our fully realised vision for battle royale on console.”

The big H1Z1 launch update on PS4, which becomes available today, includes season one of the H1Z1 Battle Pass.

Players will be able to unlock 30 reward levels across three distinct lines (free, premium and PS Plus).

The H1Z1 Battle Pass season 1 premium line can be purchased for $5.49 in the US and €5.49 in Europe.

While PS Plus members will receive the PlayStation Plus line included in membership and level progression will carry over between lines.

The H1Z1 update today will also include two new weapons – the explosive RPG and the deadly SOCOM sniper rifle.

A new vehicle, the ARV, is also being added today.

While new launch bundles are also being released for H1Z1 on PS4.

Players can now customise their character through the new viper starter bundle ($4.99 USD / €4.99) or hardline deluxe bundle.

Both launch bundles are now available at a special discount until September 4 on the PlayStation Store.

H1Z1 has been dubbed “the original standalone Battle Royale game” by its developers.

It is a fast-paced, competitive battle royale shooter which sees players parachute in and search for weapons, ammo, vehicles and supplies to stay alive.

As toxic gas compresses the map, players have to develop a winning strategy and prepare for the final showdown with the last remaining survivors.

• H1Z1 is available for free right now on Windows PC and PlayStation 4.
