Japan weather MAPPED: Where could Typhoon Shanshan make landfall in Japan?

The tropical cyclone is currently over the open western Pacific Ocean.

But Typhoon Shanshan will track northwest and approach Japan this week,

Once in Japan, it could make landfall near Tokyo.

Shanshan has the equivalent strength of a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic and East Pacific basins.

However, the typhoon could strengthen further in the next 24 to 36 hours.

According to Accuweather, Shanshan will approach the coastline of Honshu by the middle of the week.

This will cause rain and wind to move into the Greater Tokyo Area by Wednesday afternoon local time.

During Wednesday and Thursday night, the worst impact to land from the typhoon will occur.

People are being warned to expect widespread power outages and damage to trees.

There could also be a risk of mudslides and transport chaos.

The Greater Tokyo Area could be hit with up to 4 inches (100 mm) of rainfall, as well as gusts of winds of up to 72 mph (115 km/h).

However, the magnitude of these winds will depend on whether Shanshan makes landfall or instead turns northwards before it reaches the coast.

Areas in the north, such as Sendai, could be flooded and damaged by winds as Shanshan will track near to the northern coast of Honshu on Thursday.

The typhoon will then head northeast on Friday, meaning that the worst will then be over for Japan.

The storm comes after Japan was battered by Typhoon Jongdori only last month.
