Google Maps update brings a brilliant new way to see the world

Google Maps regularly gets updated by the tech giant, but not all new features are widely touted.

Instead many additions are left for users to discover for themselves.

The latest update for Google Maps is subtle but will radically change how you look at the world.

When using the incredibly useful service, zoom out and you will now see the world as a 3D globe rather than a flat plane.

The new rounded look, dubbed Globe Mode, is not immediately noticeable – when zooming and moving around on lower levels Google Maps will look the same as it always has.

But once the user zooms out far enough the radical new look will be revealed.

The latest update is currently only available for the desktop version of Google Maps.

Those using the service’s app will instead by greeted by the old view when they attempt to zoom out.

In a tweet Google insisted the new look allowed the service to be more accurate.

The app’s original look made areas with higher latitudes appear questionable in size.

This led to areas such as Greenland looking similar in scale to the entire continent of Africa.

Google appears to have noted the criticisms of Maps from users.

The company tweeted: “With 3D Globe Mode on Google Maps desktop, Greenland’s projection is no longer the size of Africa.”

Although the update will presumably make its way to both iOS and Android versions of the Google Maps app, no date has yet been given by the tech giant.

The service also received a helpful new feature last week that changed how people share their location with each other.

The tweak meant users sharing their position would also broadcast their battery life percentage to those selected.

Android Police noticed the new feature and confirmed it was incredibly accurate.

The addition will surely be helpful to anyone wondering why a friend or family member has not answered their calls.
