MacBook Air 2018 release – why now may be a very bad time to buy Apple’s popular laptop

The MacBook currently sells for £949 on Apple’s official website if you want the base level model with a 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor.

However Express.co.uk found the same model for £799 on John Lewis.

But the chips inside the notebook from Intel are currently from its fifth generation lineup, meaning they are somewhat out of date when compared with other Mac models.

A new leak from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News claims a MacBook Air refresh could be on the horizon.

It adds the computers will harness the power of Intel’s 8th-generation chips known as Kaby Lake.

This would significantly increase the performance of the MacBook air.

Although the report from the publication has not been confirmed, it could mean anyone looking to pick up a MacBook Air should wait to see if Apple announces a refresh.

The i5 and i7 Kaby Lake chips from Intel were released towards the end of last year.

They are capable of reaching speeds as fast as 1.6GHz to 1.9GHz.

Turbo Boost speeds are between 3.4GHz and 4.2GHz.

A move from Apple to refresh the MacBook Air sooner rather than later could mean the thin laptop is set to miss out on Intel’s next generation chip technology.

The chip manufacturer is tipped to release Whiskey Lake processors in a few months time, but the report from the Economic Daily News claims Apple will not wait for these to be released.

Intel is also planning to introduce Cannon Lake chips, that will drastically allow for greater performance, next year.

The MacBook Air is currently sporting a redesign from 2010 – it is unknown if the computer will see a redesign in addition to new chips.

The last major internal MacBook Air refresh came in 2015.

But in March that same year Apple unveiled a new MacBook it dubbed the thinnest of the product line.

It came with a Retina display and the promise of all-day battery life.

The MacBook was also the first to feature Apple’s “butterfly mechanism” keyboard that has since been refreshed and made its way newer MacBook Pro models.
