Liverpool star Adam Lallana sends warning to Man City over Premier League title challenge

Liverpool have splashed out £175m on new arrrivals this summer to help Klopp build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title.

Having already spent £75m on Virgil van Djik in January, Liverpool’s total spending has reached a whopping £250m this year.

During Klopp’s time at the helm, Liverpool have lost the League Cup final, Europa League final and Champions League final.

Now Lallana says this must be the season where they break that losing streak and win silverware.

“I just want to take the next step now,” he said. “We’ve been in a few finals that we haven’t been victorious in and that needs to change.”

“We’ve got all the ingredients there, the experience we’ve gained and the squad we’ve put together, the signs are really good for us to go the next step.”

Liverpool, who have not won the league title since 1990, have emerged as the front-runners to challenge champions Manchester City after their huge summer spending spree.

Asked if Liverpool were favourites to challenge City, Lallana said: “That’s not for us to say, that’s for other people to speculate.

“But, of course, we’re going to be in the pack who want to chase down City.

“Hopefully, Liverpool and three or four of the other top teams can squeeze a few more points out of City this year and that would make it more interesting.”

Lallana, 30, was on stand-by for England’s World Cup squad in Russia following injury problems last season but failed to make Gareth Southgate’s final 23-man squad.

The midfielder admitted to mixed feelings watching England reach the semi-finals, but said he was full of pride for his Liverpool team-mates who made it there.

He said: “On one hand it was difficult because I wanted to be out there, but on the other, watching one of my best mates play, Jordan Henderson, and be one of the best players out there, it was great.

“Same with Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. To see the team blossom out there and to know I’ll be back there with them next season, I’m really looking forward to the start of the Premier League.”
