Brother of Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager UNDER INVESTIGATION in Trump-Mueller probe

Mr Podesta, a former lobbyist, along with former Republican congressman from Minnesota Vin Weber, and Greg Craig, a former White House counsel in the Obama White House, are facing an investigation by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, according to sources.

It was previously reported Mr Mueller was looking into Mr Podesta and his Democrat-leaning lobbying firm, Podesta Group, in relation to his wider investigation into the finances of Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort.

President Trump raised concern surrounding Mr Podesta’s former lobbying work on Twitter last year, stating: “Was the brother of John Podesta paid big money to get the sanctions on Russia lifted? Did Hillary know?”

He added on Sunday: “Why isn’t Mueller looking at all of the criminal activity and real Russian collusion on the Democratic side; Podesta dossier?”

None of the individuals involved in the case have been charged, and there is no indication that the enquiries carried out by the SDNY will result in any criminal charges.

All the enquiries are concerning whether the individuals conducted work on behalf of organisations associated with Ukraine without properly registering as foreign agents with the Justice Department.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) requires any individual or lobbyist working on behalf of a foreign government or political party to file public reports outlining their relationship and the financial income received.

The Podesta Group stated they were fully cooperating with Mr Mueller’s enquiry, and noted they failed to register as a foreign agent due to false information provided by the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine.

The group claimed they registered their work with the US Congress due to information provided by the organisation, which suggested it was not an arm of the Ukrainian government.

The three individuals are believed to have worked at one time for Mr Manafort when he was conducting political work for the Party of Regions, a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine.

Mr Manafort is currently standing trial in Virginia on a series of charges related to tax fraud, bank fraud and failing to report foreign bank accounts.

These charges relate to a large amount of money he made during numerous years while working for the Ukrainian government and political leaders.

President Trump’s former campaign manager also faces a second trial in Washington DC in September on charges that include conspiracy to defraud the United States and making false Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) statements.

Tony Podesta is the bother of John Podesta, the former campaign manager of Hillary Clinton, who is not believed to be part of the investigation.

Mr Mueller’s investigation into Mr Craig and Mr Podesta, who are regarded as Democratic figures, will serve to quell fears that the whole probe is a “witch hunt” against the Republican administration.

President Trump criticised the investigation on Wednesday, stating: “Russian collusion with the Trump campaign, one of the most successful in history, is a total hoax.

“The Democrats paid for the phony and discredited dossier which was, along with Comey, McCabe, Strzok and his lover, the lovely Lisa Page, used to begin the Witch Hunt. Disgraceful!”
