Judge Dredd video game news: Rebellion drops huge 2000 AD third-party hint

Judge Dredd could be about the get the video game treatment.

The 2000 AD comic book character has made surprisingly few video game appearances over the years.

There was a 1995 platformer, which was released alongside that year’s film starring Sylvester Stallone.  This was followed by Rebellion’s very own Judge Dredd game in 2003.

But if Rebellion founder Jason Kingsley’s latest comments are anything to go by, it looks like the popular character could make a return to gaming soon.

Speaking exclusively to Express Online, Kingsley said that Rebellion was open to licensing its intellectuial properties to third-party developers.

“One thing I said about a year ago is that I was opening up the intellectual property catalogue to third-parties,” Kingsley said.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in that. A few deals have been done, not announced yet, because we’re working on stuff.

“But we’ve had a lot of people interested in working with us, and their visions for our intellectual properties, which is really exciting.”

Kingsley said that he was hoping to see some 2000 AD games soon, before dropping a Judge Dredd hint.

“So hopefully, I would reckon towards the end of this year/beginning of next, we’ll start to see the fruits of that and start to announce things that we’re working on and show people what’s going on,” he continued.

“Fingers crossed we’ll get some more 2000 AD games soon.”

Asked specifically about a Judge Dredd game, he said: “Well Judge Dredd is obviously one of our major comic book characters so I would be surprised if there wasn’t going to be some activity around Judge Dredd, but we’re not actually announcing anything.”

In the meantime, Rebellion is working on Strange Brigade for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Strange Brigade an August 28 release date on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

A distinctly British game that owes a debt to Saturday matinees and 1930s pulp fiction, Strange Brigade sees four players team up to battle ancient terrors.

“Risen from the dead, the Witch Queen Seteki commands an army of mummified monstrosities hell-bent on terror, and only one band of brave adventurers has the gusto to sock ancient evil back into its sarcophagus!” reads a Rebellion post.

“Together, the Strange Brigade must take on treacherous traps, overcome puzzling predicaments and blast their way through hordes of malevolent monsters in a thrilling campaign for 1-4 players.”

Fans who pre-order the game will will receive the Secret Service Weapons Pack for free.
