Kevin Durant to re-join Oklahoma City Thunder? Russell Westbrook relationship revelation

That’s the sensational claim from Yahoo Sports’ Chris Mannix, who believes Durant will “strongly consider” re-joining the Thunder in free agency next summer.

Durant signed a two-year extension with the Golden State Warriors last month after winning a second consecutive NBA title, but he holds a player-option for the second season meaning he can become a free agent in 2019.

It has led to suggestions that the Warriors could be broken up next summer with both Durant and Klay Thompson able to leave as free agents.

Thompson has made it clear he wants to remain a Warrior, but Durant has been less adamant of his desire to stay there long-term.

The Lakers have the cap space to be able to sign the two-time NBA Finals MVP in free agency while the New York Knicks have also been mentioned.

Durant left the Thunder in 2016 under acrimonious circumstances with Oklahoma City fans berating his decision to join the Warriors.

And it was clear his departure left a sour taste in Westbrook’s mouth as he would often aim subtle jibes at his former team-mate during interviews and came to blows when matched up against each other.

However, Mannix believes enough time has passed and the wounds have healed, leaving the door open for the 29-year-old to join back up with Westbrook.

“I think Kevin Durant will be open-minded next summer when it comes to where he wants to go. But I keep going back to Oklahoma City,” he said on The Herd.

“I keep going back to the fact that everything we know about Kevin Durant, the sensitivities, how much he hates the fact that people say he jumped on Steph Curry’s bandwagon, and the fact that there’s been no bridge burnt with Oklahoma City.

“The relationship with Russell Westbrook seems to be the best it’s been since he left Oklahoma City.

“I know that there’s some financial gymnastics you have to do to get a Kevin Durant on the roster, but I really believe come the end of the year, he’s going to take a long look at Oklahoma City.”
